A Sweet Treat to Share with Family and Friends
December is all about slowing down, gathering with loved ones, and enjoying the simple things that make the season so special. Nothing says “holiday comfort” quite like a steaming mug of rich, creamy hot cocoa — especially when you make it from scratch.
Here’s a quick and easy recipe that you can whip up in minutes and enjoy by the fireplace, after a stroll through holiday lights, or while you wrap presents.
Creamy Holiday Hot Cocoa
Ingredients (Serves 4)
- 4 cups milk (or dairy-free alternative)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Optional Toppings: Whipped cream, marshmallows, cinnamon, crushed peppermint, or chocolate shavings
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
- Slowly add 1 cup of the milk, whisking until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
- Stir in the remaining milk and heat until warm (do not boil).
- Add the chocolate chips and stir until completely melted and the cocoa is smooth and creamy.
- Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and pour into mugs.
- Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
Serving Tip: This recipe is easy to double or triple if you’re hosting friends and family. You can also prepare it ahead, keep it warm in a slow cooker, and let guests customize their mugs with a “toppings bar.”
